Geometric works
It fascinates Monica to manipulate the perception. The geometric works on canvas, as well as the mathematical works in color pencil, show an optical effect. The works have an ornamental character and are inspired by Islamic patterns, which were later taken over by the European Renaissance.

Optical mathematics with gray and gold
2020Optical mathematics with gray and gold [white border is painted] Method: For the design concept, some elements of the idea are first drawn on the computer. [Note: this is definitely my own original design and not taken from the internet!] After that the drawing concept / idea is further elaborated on paper. Then everything is worked out more accurately on graph paper [+ to scale] and the color scheme is determined and classified. It takes three months to design and it also takes three months to paint the final design on canvas.

Geometric work: Irregular Pentagon in Diagonal with three 4 pointed stars
2016Geometric work: Irregular pentagon in diagonal with three 4-pointed stars. The edges are painted on the canvas. This is therefore not a frame. The regular and irregular pentagon cannot be multiplied two- or three-dimensionally, without creating differently shaped intermediate surfaces or spaces. In the work 'Irregular pentagon diagonal' you see 3 stars that have been created in the spaces. In this case the stars have 4 points. In nature the pentagon, such as in crystals for example, is unknown. Mondrian was very concerned with the quadrangle and the vertical-horizontal concept, but never concerned himself with the pentagon.
Geometric work: Irregular Pentagon around Octagon
2016Geometric work: Irregular Pentagon around Octagon. The edges are painted on the canvas. So this is not a frame. This work with 16 irregular pentagons is formed around a regular octagon and suggests 4 half octagons. In nature, the pentagon, such as in crystals, is unknown. Mondrian was very concerned with the quadrangle and the vertical-horizontal concept, but never concerned himself with the pentagon.

San Marco
2009The San Marco design consists of a pentagon in three large triangles. The three large triangles form five points. San Marco is inspired by a marble floor section of the San Marco in Venice.
Lemniscate ship rope
2012Lemniscate ship rope. In July 2012 this work was on display at Hiva Oa Art Gallery in Lelystad. The work was made on the theme: Zuiderzeemuseum Enkhuizen. Because I make geometric work, for me the "art" is mainly to translate the theme into geometric shapes. In the Zuiderzeemuseum you see enough examples of knots or sailor's knots made of rope. For me that was the reason to braid a rope on canvas. For more photos and information you can take a look at my Blog.

Trigonal [Optical work] Atelier route 2011
2011As part of the 2011 studio route, the optical work "Trigonaal" was exhibited in the arts center De Kubus in Lelystad. This work was first designed on graph paper and then put on canvas and painted. Including the time needed to design, this work took 8 months to complete. The boxes are "painted" twice. The clean lines are placed on the canvas with a drawing pen. If you look at one point in the work for a longer period of time without blinking, you can see optical effects. The cross shape in the work e.g. "deforms" more into a diamond. Perception is manipulated.

Triangle 3 D
2010Work for studio route 2010. Triangle 3 D. This three-dimensional constructive object [3D] cannot look like this in reality. This triangle is emphatically a different variant than the already known impossible triangles that exist. In addition, a small triangle is incorporated into a larger triangle here. You see two impossible triangles of which it is impossible to determine which sides are outside and which sides are inside. Here too it is about perception and reality.
