Geometric + Themes
In addition to geometric works, you can also see constructivist and other works made on a theme for specific exhibitions. Some geometric works show an optical effect, play with perception or have an ornamental character, inspired by Islamic patterns later adopted by the European Renaissance.

Lemniscate ship's rope
2012Lemniscate ship's rope. In July 2012 this work was shown in Hiva Oa Art Gallery in Lelystad. The work was made on the theme: Zuiderzeemuseum Enkhuizen. Because I make geometric work, it is mainly the "art" for me to convert the theme into geometric shapes. In the Zuiderzeemuseum you can see enough examples of knots or sailor's knots made of rope. That was the reason for me to braid a rope on canvas. For more photos and information please take a look at my Blog.

2012Boris the dog. [geometric dogs] This work was made especially for children on the occasion of an exhibition in the Colombinehuis in Biddinghuizen. When the work hangs in the space and you walk from left to right, the dog's eyes look with you. Photos with more information about the Colombinehuis can be found on my art blog. Synthesis 1. Optical work
2007Synthesis 1. As with previous mathematical works, in this work you can look at one point without blinking and see what happens to the observation. What is your reality? [NB: the gray areas in this image are colored evenly with silver. However, this cannot be photographed like this].
Synthesis 2. Optical work
2007Synthesis 2. Just like with Synthesis 1 [see previous work], in this work you can keep looking at one point, without blinking, to see what happens to the perception. What is your reality? [NB: the gray areas in this image are colored evenly with silver. However, this cannot be photographed like this].

View on News. The New Wilderness. Omroep Flevoland
2015Work in the context of: "View on News" for an exhibition at Omroep Flevoland in October 2015 and in the Flevomeer Library Lelystad from August 2016. Subject: 'The new wilderness'. [News item is the film about animal life in the Oostvaardersplassen near Lelystad that was completed in 2014.] For two years, several film crews followed the foxes, geese, kingfishers, deer and the largest herd of wild horses in Europe. The film has been a great success. In my imagination/interpretation, foxes are incorporated into a man-made wilderness, with an apparently well-ordered nature, but appearances can be deceiving, nature goes its own way and has its own stories, also on this screen!

[over the IJssel near Hattem] From August 2016 the exhibition was also on display in the Flevomeer Library Lelystad.
Exhibition: The Artist Stops: On the Destruction of Art and Culture by National Policy

In addition, a framed work entitled: BLACK - WHITE. In the foreground the globe by Guda Boelens entitled: "The Artist of the World". Theme: "The artist is quitting", in response to the impending decline in art and culture. Standing in front of the installation: Monica, initiator of this exhibition. In the foreground, Magda Brouwer, accordionist of the sentimental song choir "De Waterlanders", specially invited to the opening of this exhibition.
There's no music in it anymore
2012"There's no music in it anymore." This work is based on the theme "The artist quits," a response to the impending budget cuts and the decline of art and culture. A small black cloth and an empty violin case are glued to the white canvas with a black border.
The last strings have been counted
2012"The Last Strings Are Counted." This work is based on the theme "The Artist Gives Up," a response to the impending budget cuts and the decline of art and culture. A smaller black canvas and a violin, its strings about to break, are glued to the white canvas with a black border.
Black [Snow] White in response to an exhibition about deforestation
2012Title: "Black and White chokes on the poisonous apple of cuts to art and culture." "Which prince kisses me?" This kitschy work in a Mondrian-like setting was created for the playful protest exhibition [April 2012 at Kunsthuis Calliope and in 2013 at the Almere Library] with the theme: "The artist quits," in response to the impending destruction of art and culture. The title speaks for itself. The small canvas featuring Black and White is mounted on reflective material inspired by the fairy tale of Snow White, and in this case, the frame is part of the work. For more information: see the press release via the links on this site or the link to Toonkunst.

2011As part of "The Year of Lelystad Water," a group of artists under the name KUP 11 [Kunst uit de Polder 2011] is exhibiting works on the theme of water at various locations and events throughout 2011. As an exception, Monica presents a non-geometric triptych on this theme. The triptych is a compilation of images captured under various weather conditions during car rides along the dike from Lelystad to Enkhuizen, where a bird island lies in the Markermeer and where a life of its own unfolds in complete tranquility.

Trash captured. Title of the diptych: Michelin searches for a tire and Fallen mirror.
2016As part of the theme 'Trapped Waste', the diptych above was created on a hardboard panel totaling 1.60 meters in length. The title on the left has a double meaning: 'Michelin seeks tire', partly referring to the enormous quantities of car tires scattered all over the world. The Michelin men have become collector's items. "My" little man has been renovated and is getting a second life. My Michelin man was looking for a tire with a tire. That is what he told me. That is why I gave him a piece of tire. That is less lonely, even though it is only half a tire, but still... he now has at least another HALF! Title on the right: 'Fallen Mirror'. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who... oh, who... is the fairest of them all? Beauty in decay? Or... does recycling play a role in old age? Just like with people? And how do you look in the mirror? As far as I'm concerned, they can renovate it, preferably for another 100 years, but not as waste!
